Water
The Town’s water system serves over 800 in-town customers and over 250 out-of-town customers. The Town provides water service to customers through 11.6 miles of water mains within town and through 13.2 miles of water mains located out of town.
Water from the town comes from two wells located in town and the Fort Casey well field, located out of town. Fort Casey is the primary source of water, the in town wells are used during the summer months when the demand is greatest.
Water storage facilities are on Pennington Hill. A treatment facility at Ft. Casey improves the quality of the water from Fort Casey.
The quality of water available is a function of the geology of our area. Rain water filters through the ground to aquifers, which are tapped by wells. Unfortunately, some of the minerals in the ground make our water hard and affect the taste. Treatment of the water improves the taste, but the water remains hard. Additional treatment of the water to improve its quality would increase the cost significantly. Since most of the water is used for flushing the toilet, washing dishes, laundry and bodies, it is more cost effective to buy drinking water if you don’t care for the taste, than to pay so much more for water that is not consumed.
The rates for water are developed to encourage conservation during the peak use months in the summer.
For the average in-town residential customer, the base rate is $13.33 per month. There is an additional charge per cubic foot of water used. The rate October through May is $.0275 and June through September is $.0412.
For the average out of town residential customer, the base rate is $20.00 per month. There is an additional charge per cubic foot of water used. The rate October through May is $.0412 and June through September is $.0618.
